Reasons for circumcisions

  1. Religious and personal preference.
  2. Improved penile hygiene: (Reduced odor and risk of yeast infection due to retained urine around the foreskin.)
  3. Reduced risk of urinary tract infection

Types of circumcision

Two types of circumcision are commonly done for newborns.

  1. The first type cuts the foreskin directly using a clamp or surgical device.
  2. The second type uses a plastic ring to cut off the blood supply to the foreskin (Plastibel type).

Which type of circumcision is better?

Both types of circumcision are equally effective and will provide the same cosmetic results. However, circumcision with the plastic ring is the most common type done for newborns, because it is considered safer with less risk for bleeding and infection. Note: If your baby did not receive the vitamin K injection, then the plastic ring is the safest option to prevent bleeding.

How is the Plastibel done?

  1. A round plastic ring is inserted around the penis.
  2. The foreskin is tied to the ring to cut off its blood supply.

The foreskin is then trimmed, leaving just the plastic ring, which falls off naturally within 2 weeks. This safe and simple procedure takes less than 5 minutes.

“If your baby did not receive the vitamin K injection, then the plastic ring is the safest option to prevent bleeding.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Baby be in Pain?

Yes, if we don’t use any pain medications, your baby will be in pain during the procedure. But this pain is transient and resolves afterwards.

But circumcision doesn’t have to be a painful procedure for your newborn baby. We typically use lidocaine injection or cream to numb the penis before the procedure.

We also use gripe water, a safe, natural, herbal supplement, to soothe your baby during the procedure.

A teaspoon of gripe water will calm your baby during the procedure. We rarely have babies cry when we combine the gripe water and lidocaine, and we have had several babies sleep through the procedure. Your baby’s comfort is our priority.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

  1. Do not feed the baby within 30 minutes before the procedure. You may feed your baby after the procedure.
  2. You may purchase gripe water to soothe your baby during the procedure.

How do I take care of my baby after the circumcision?

  1. The aftercare of the plastic ring circumcision is minimal. There is often no need for extra ointment or medications, and the penis can be taken care of as if there were no circumcision done.
  2. You may gently cleanse the area with a baby wipe or warm water when it is soiled. The plastic ring prevents poop from infecting the penis.
  3. As an extra precaution, some people apply Vaseline or antibiotic ointment to the circumcision site, but this is not compulsory.

What should I watch out for?

  1. A small quarter-sized blood spot may be seen on the diaper, but this should resolve within an hour.
  2. The plastic ring will naturally fall off on its own within two weeks, just like the umbilical cord, because it lacks blood supply.

The skin will completely heal within a few days after the plastic ring falls off. As an extra precaution, you may apply Vaseline or antibiotic ointment to this healing skin if desired until it is completely healed.

What about cost and payment?

We currently do not accept insurance for the circumcision procedure; however, we will provide you with a receipt that you may submit to your insurance company. The cost of the procedure changes as our supply costs fluctuates. We accept electronic payments via Zelle, CashApp, Venmo, or Cash.

What about follow-up?

  1. Follow up with your pediatrician within a week after the procedure.
  2. You may also call the clinic or text me if you have any questions about the procedure, and I will call you back.
